Are you planning to implement SMS marketing on your Shopify store? One question you'll face is who you can send SMS marketing to.

According to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), customers must give businesses “express written consent” before the business sends them automated promotional text messages. More information can be found in our SMS Compliance Overview Guide.

There are two basic ways to collect SMS subscribers and get their consents:

  1. Use EngageMessage signup popup to collect SMS subscribers

  2. Collect SMS consent at checkout on your Shopify store

Question: I already collected a bunch of customers' phone numbers in my Shopify store, can I send promotional text messages to them?

Answer: No, you can't. You will need to enable SMS consent at checkout on your Shopify store, so your customers can choose to give you the consent to send them promotional text messages. If you haven't enabled the SMS consent at checkout, the phone numbers your customers give are not for promotional text message purpose.

In this article, we'll go through how to enable consent at checkout on Shopify, so you can send promotional text messages to customers who give consent.

How to Enable SMS Consent at Checkout on Shopify?

Navigate to your Shopify store. Then, click Settings at the bottom of the left sidebar.

In the Settings page, click Checkout.

Under the Checkout section, scroll down and find the Marketing consent section. Select the box for Show an option to subscribe at checkout.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save. You're all set!

What your customers will see?

At the checkout page, your customers can select the checkbox to accept news and offers via text messages. If they give consent at checkout, they'll become your SMS subscribers and you can send them promotional text messages.

If you already enabled SMS consent at checkout and have collected SMS subscribers in Shopify, your SMS subscribers will be synced to EngageMessage when you linked your store for the first time. You can find your SMS subscribers under the Contacts page > All Contacts > add filter " SMS accepts marketing is true".
